European Union imposes another restriction for Russian drivers

Russian drivers will no longer be able to use “Green Cards” in EU countries, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. They will need to purchase a border insurance policy at checkpoints.

From June 1, 2023, Russian Green Cards will become invalid in the European Union. The Russian Federation also imposes similar restrictions for European countries. This was reported on the Interfax website.

“Green Card” is an international agreement on motor vehicle third party liability insurance. This system covered 48 countries, including Ukraine, but from June 1, Russia will be excluded.

The Russian Association of Motor Insurers terminates bilateral agreements with motor insurance bureaus/associations in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Until June 1, “Green Cards” will work as usual.

For trips within EU countries, Switzerland and the UK after 31 May 2023, Russian drivers will need to purchase the respective country’s border insurance policy at checkpoints. This restriction will also apply to travel within Russia.
