How to determine the range of electric vehicles – features of the methodology

To determine their range, electric vehicles are tested in a special testing area. The tests simulate city and highway driving.

The range of an electric vehicle is an important parameter that buyers always pay attention to. It is determined using a special technique with clearly written rules and algorithm. Featured on Motor Mouth’s website.

There are several different ways to measure the range of electric cars. The most accurate of these is considered to be the method developed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Initially, this institution measured the fuel consumption of gasoline cars and then switched to the range of electric cars.

As a rule, electric vehicles with a range of up to 10,000 km are chosen. In EPA tests, they cover at least 1,000 miles. It is tested in a 6 km long special test field. At the same time, the vehicle is loaded to simulate the presence of passengers and luggage.

During the test cycle, electric cars alternate between driving and stopping to simulate urban driving. They reach speeds of 48 to 112 km/h, just like on the highway. Highway driving takes up 45% of the test cycle, while city driving takes up 55%.
