In Ukraine, technical inspection is now mandatory for certain categories of vehicles. If not completed on time, the violator may be fined or even deprived of his/her driver’s license.

Where does car inspection take place in Ukraine and which cars need to be inspected
Technical inspection in Ukraine is carried out by authorized commercial organizations (STO). This procedure is mandatory for vehicles (i.e. commercial vehicles) and special equipment that are regularly used to transport goods and passengers for profit.
Frequency of technical inspection for different types of transport:
- Passenger vehicles over 2 years old used in taxi transportation – once a year;
- Trucks over 1 year old – once a year;
- Cargo-passenger vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons, over 2 years old – every 2 years;
- Buses used for more than 2 years – every 6 months;
- Wheeled tractors that have been in use for more than 2 years – every 2 years;
- special vehicles – once a year;
- Wheeled vehicles used for the transportation of hazardous, toxic and flammable substances – 1 year from the date of production and every 6 months thereafter.
It is worth emphasizing that private passenger vehicles that are not used for commercial purposes are still exempt from inspection. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has promised that technical inspection of passenger vehicles will return soon after the end of martial law. It is already known that it will be supported by video recording.
What changes have occurred in technical supervision in Ukraine?
Since September 2023, vehicle inspection has been digitalized in Ukraine. The “E-protocol”, which contains information about the date, time and results of this transaction, was put into practice. An electronic document has the same legal force as a paper document.
Documents for passing the technical inspection:
- Passport of a Ukrainian citizen (for the owner’s representative);
- vehicle registration certificate (registration certificate);
- power of attorney for the right to undergo technical examination (for individuals);
- a copy of the certificate of state registration (if the legal entity passes verification).
Cost of technical review in 2024:
- from 1120 UAH – for passenger cars;
- From 1260 UAH – for buses weighing up to 5 tons;
- From 1344 UAH – for buses weighing over 5 tons;
- From 1260 UAH – for trucks weighing up to 12 tons;
- From 1440 UAH – for trucks weighing over 12 tons;
- From 1120 UAH – for trailers weighing up to 10 tons;
- From 1320 UAH – for trailers weighing over 10 tons.
Fine for lack of technical inspection in Ukraine
Penalties were determined for violation of the rules of technical inspection of vehicles. Especially in Ukraine, a fine of 340 hryvnia is foreseen if the technical inspection is not carried out on time.
Repeated (within one year) violation is punishable by a fine of 850 to 1,700 hryvnias. In addition, in this case, the driver faces deprivation of driver’s license for 3 to 6 months or even administrative arrest for 5-10 days.
