Ukrainians in Poland are waiting for significant changes: what the authorities warned

Polish authorities want to provide better assistance to people against the backdrop of a possible second wave of refugees from Ukraine.

Refugees arriving in Poland from Ukraine will need to obtain a PESEL (identification number). Also, from March 3, 2023, Ukrainians will have to pay for their stay in mass centers. It is reported by Polish Radio.

According to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, appropriate changes will be made to the Special Law on Refugees. That is why the Polish authorities want to provide better assistance to people against the backdrop of a possible second wave of refugees.

“We are preparing for the possible next wave of refugees, because today several million people in Ukraine do not have access to electricity, water, basic living conditions and sanitary facilities,” the Polish official said.

What will change for Ukrainians in Poland?

According to the changes, from March 1, 2023, Ukrainian refugees will pay the cost of staying more than 120 days in public centers in Poland. At first, Ukrainians are expected to cover 50% (PLN 40) of the cost of living and already 75% (PLN 60) within a few months. In particular, this obligation shall not apply to:

  • people with disabilities;
  • children;
  • pregnant woman;
  • persons of retirement age and those caring for at least three children.

In Poland, they believe it will be possible to reduce the cost of housing for Ukrainians by stopping state aid payments to those who still receive it but have already left Poland.

Earlier, Focus explained why 23 Ukrainian women with children were evicted from a hotel in Ireland. We also remember that Ukrainian refugees in the UK may have to return to Ukraine due to difficulties in finding housing. British residents of Leicestershire who have accepted refugees have faced rising costs this autumn, and the search for housing for Ukrainians is now a lottery.
