Electricity tariffs: Cabinet reports how much Ukrainians will pay by the end of spring

On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine took an important decision on electricity tariffs for Ukrainians.

Electricity prices in Ukraine will remain at the same level. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on April 25, 2023 that the Council of Ministers decided to extend the existing tariffs for the population for another month.

Thus, there will be no increase in electricity tariffs until the end of May.

“The government maintains the preferential electricity price for the public for another month,” the cabinet chief said.

Light tariffs: how much does Ukraine pay

Consumers are now paying 1.44 UAH per kWh, if less than 250 kWh is used per month and 1.68 UAH per kWh, if you have consumed more than 250 kWh per month.

According to the data of the National Commission for State Regulation in the Fields of Energy and Utilities (NKREKU), a Ukrainian family consumes, on average, about 165 kWh of current per month. So according to the current tariff you have to pay 237.6 UAH per month for electricity.

How and when will electricity prices increase?

On April 21, 2023, the head of NEURC Konstantin Uschapovsky said in the broadcast of the telethon that the Ukrainian government can increase electricity tariffs for household consumers by one and a half or even two times.

He explained that electricity tariffs should be increased due to the high costs of restoring Ukrainian infrastructure damaged by shelling by the Russian Armed Forces. Currently, power engineers use temporary power supply schemes, but these need to be replaced in order to survive the next heating season.

At the same time, on April 19, NEURC representative Olga Babiy said that new electricity tariffs will be announced to Ukrainians in late April or early May. This is an inevitable process as Ukraine needs more money for energy production.

“The most important factor in the realization of these processes is the availability of money to produce electricity. It is not produced from air. It is fuel, it is people’s salary.”

More Focus He wrote that the increase in electricity tariffs for the public could be a response to the difficulties faced by the Ukrainian energy sector due to Russian energy terrorism.
