“Already limited”: Ukrainians warn of possible power outages in summer

According to Alexander Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Center, businesses are already setting limits on electricity consumption. Next up are regular consumers.

Ukrainians have been advised to prepare for possible power outages this summer. Alexander Kharchenko, director of the Energy Research Center, announced this in an interview with the RBC-Ukraine news agency on Wednesday (July 5th).

During the peak consumption period in July and August, the lack of capacity in the electricity grid becomes palpable and consumption limits for industrial enterprises have already been lowered. According to Kharchenko, the system faces a generation gap and Ukraine receives emergency aid from Europe, estimated at 1,600-1,700 MWh per day.

According to the expert, the energy shortage increases with increasing temperatures, with July and August being the months with the highest consumption. In recent years, the peak of summer consumption in Ukraine is as high as the winter months.

“Industrial consumers are already limited. It’s not just public, the limits are carefully given 20-30% lower than what they want to consume,” said Kharchenko.

The expert noted that an increase in energy imports is possible with changes in NEURC’s price ceilings, but currently a number of large industrial consumers are already limiting their consumption. He also stressed that these restrictions could affect private consumers as well, but that could happen later this summer.

What will happen to the light in autumn?

Regarding the coming months, the expert pointed out that other conditions will determine the development of events and no one can predict what will happen in October-November.

“I am confident that attacks on energy infrastructure will continue,” Harchenko said.

Recall that on May 29, the director of the Energy Research Center Alexander Kharchenko warned that electricity consumption limits for businesses would be introduced.

On June 28, Volodymyr Kudrytsky, chairman of the board of directors of NPC Ukrenergo, said that in the autumn-winter period, a serious deficit will again appear in the Ukrainian energy system.
