Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov did not support the farmers: he believes that farmers have no right to oppose European demands, including the import of Ukrainian grain.
Bulgarian farmers are preparing for mass protests on Monday in connection with the resumption of grain imports from Ukraine into the country. Radio Bulgaria reported this on Saturday, September 16th.
It should be noted that, unlike Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, Bulgaria has not renewed documents for the import of Ukrainian grain into the country and now local farmers are threatening to close roads and border crossings. However, the head of the country’s government, Nikolai Denkov, said the farmers’ claims were untenable.
“If the state gives more than 2 billion leva, representatives of the agricultural sector cannot claim that the state does not care,” the politician said.
Denkov believes that farmers cannot ignore European requirements, given that the tractors they want to use to block roads were purchased with European funds. Farmers also cannot say they are not interested in Europe when most of the funds they receive in the form of subsidies and aid come from Europe.
“I advise grain producers to reject European funds and then ban Ukrainian goods,” the Bulgarian Prime Minister said.
Let us remind you that on September 15, the European Commission lifted the embargo on Ukrainian grain supplies and announced the new terms of the agreement. The European Union believes that even export rates to third countries outside the European community are increasing, and therefore it is not considering banning the transportation of grain from Ukraine.
Note that restrictions on the import of wheat, sunflowers, corn and rapeseed from Ukraine to Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia have been in force since May 2023. At first, the ban was valid until June 5, but it was later decided to extend it until September 15. At the same time, the transit of such goods to other countries for export purposes is not prohibited.
