“We are ready for winter”: DTEK says whether power outages are planned in Ukraine

According to YASNO CEO Sergei Kovalenko, outages are difficult to predict as they depend on emergency aid and electricity imports from other countries, as well as shelling by the Russian Armed Forces.

Power outages this winter are hard to predict. However, Ukraine has learned to adapt to Russian Armed Forces’ missile attacks on critical infrastructures. This was stated by Sergei Kovalenko, CEO of the electricity provider company YASNO (part of the DTEK group – ed.) in the broadcast of the 1+1 TV channel.

According to him, there was already a large consumption of electricity in August due to extreme heat in Ukraine. In Kiev, it approached winter levels and the system remained afloat.

Kovalenko noted that Ukraine managed to restore the energy system after damage and summer repairs, but its efficiency does not always reach 100%, especially during periods of high consumption.

The expert said it was difficult to predict the outages because they depended on emergency aid, electricity imports from other countries and shelling by the Russian Armed Forces.

“They already know how to react to such situations in Ukraine. Since the middle of last winter, outages have become more balanced and schedules have been adapted. So, from a system perspective, we are ready for winter.” Kovalenko explained.

“When electricity is not produced, power outages may occur,” he said. However, this problem can be solved by importing from Europe. Otherwise, there will be interruptions, but they will be predictable and short-term.

Additionally, as Kovalenko noted, the Russian Armed Forces can damage networks or energy infrastructure facilities. In this case, there are two types of closure.

“The first is when we know what’s damaged and everyone knows the estimated recovery time. For example, 20 minutes, an hour, a day or two. The second is when an accident occurs. Then the time may be unknown. Nobody knows where the hits will be.” “, concluded the expert.

Let us remind you that Ukrenergo talked about this year’s shutdown schedules. Vladimir Kudritsky stated that the level of equipping infrastructure facilities with generators in Ukraine has increased significantly. According to him, this will help make power outages more even across the country.
