It will help close the gap: Ukraine will be able to import more electricity

Ukraine has more technical capacity to import electricity. In this way, it will be possible to close the gaps that may occur in the energy system during the winter months.

The Ukrainian energy system is fully synchronized with the European energy grid and is able to import large amounts of electricity. The relevant message was published on the ENTSO-E website.

It is stated that NEC Ukrenergo has fulfilled all the necessary technical requirements to transition Ukraine from the temporary regime to permanent synchronization.

Starting December 1, Ukraine will be able to import more electricity from the European Union, according to the Ministry of Energy. In particular, the European operator network ENTSO-E decided to increase its import capacity from 1.2 GW to 1.7 GW.

According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal, this will allow the Ukrainian energy system to receive an additional 500 MW, which will cover possible power outages in the winter.

Connecting to the European grid: what is known

In 2017, NEC Ukrenergo signed an agreement with the European operator network ENTSO-E on the synchronization of power systems.

Ukraine has been preparing for this step since 2002, when the Burshtyn energy island was created, technically separated from the Ukrainian energy system, and includes the Transcarpathian and partly Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. It was separated from the general power grid of Ukraine and connected to European power grids.

In particular, before the start of a full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian energy system was connected to the energy systems of Russia and Belarus. However, at midnight on February 24, Ukraine was disconnected from these power systems. This was a planned test of the power system, expected to last several days, to provide further connectivity to electricity transmission operators ENTSO-E.

Already on March 16 last year, President Vladimir Zelensky reported Regarding integration with the EU energy system This has enabled Ukraine in particular to become energy independent.

Let us recall that on November 22, Ukrenergo president Vladimir Kudrytsky said that Ukraine was imposing restrictions on electricity imports. This is because the cost of electricity in Ukraine is lower than in the EU. Therefore, less electricity is imported than capacity allows.
