The UN predicts that Ukraine will need special attention next year as the war intensifies.
The United Nations wants $46 billion allocated for humanitarian needs next year. Reuters reports this.
These funds are needed to help people particularly affected by the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and the war in Ukraine and Israel.
The UN estimates that around 300 million people will need assistance next year due to a range of factors, including conflict and climate-related emergencies. Among them, there are 74.1 million people in Eastern and Southern Africa.
It is stated that the humanitarian system is experiencing a financial crisis. While $57 billion was needed to provide aid last year, only just over a third was funded.
Important
UN aid chief Martin Griffiths says the funding gap is at its worst in decades. According to him, the Middle East, Gaza and the West Bank will need aid the most next year.
Additionally, Griffiths noted that the war in Ukraine will continue in full force in 2024, so this will require a lot of attention.
Let’s remember that at the beginning of November, the USA announced that humanitarian aid to Ukraine would be cut or even stopped. This is due to the lack of funds for direct budget support.
Also at the beginning of December, it was reported that British Foreign Secretary David Cameron wanted to meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss new aid to Ukraine.
