According to political scientist Valentin Gladkikh, Poles want the EU to reconsider some of its decisions regarding Ukraine and also offer Poland a system of compensatory mechanisms.
The blockade of the Ukrainian border by Polish farmers is a problem for Ukraine, Poland and the European Union. Political scientist Valentin Gladkikh stated this in an interview with Channel 24.
According to him, Poles primarily have a claim on the European Union. They want the EU to reconsider some of its decisions regarding Ukraine, and also to offer Poland a system of compensatory mechanisms that would minimize potential losses from opening the market for Ukrainian products.
The expert said that in this context, Ukraine’s European integration overlaps with the internal problems of the EU arising from the effective functioning of the agricultural market. Therefore, Polish farmers perceive Ukraine as a potential competitor.
Gladkikh said that the reason for the blockade was the EU’s ineffective agricultural policy. The agricultural sector is subsidized in many European countries.
“It has long been obvious that this model is far from market relations and is extremely ineffective. Therefore, there is a constant internal tension in the European Union,” the political scientist said.
According to him, the rules currently in force in the EU agricultural sector need to be reviewed. Ukraine’s integration is a catalyst for change in Europe.
“All these strikes we see today are directed more at the central European bureaucracy than at Ukraine. The demands of the protesters are mainly about the European supranational institutions offering compensation or a system to minimize losses for agricultural producers of EU member states.” Gladkikh said.
Let us remind you that on February 9, Polish protesters closed the Ukrainian border. According to the State Customs Service of Ukraine, Polish farmers also announced their intention to prevent the transportation of food from railways to trucks at the Hrubieszow-Vladimir-Volynsky checkpoint.
