Sent to “third countries”: Hungary wants to block Ukrainian agricultural products

According to Hungarian Minister of Agriculture István Nagy, Budapest wants additional restrictions on Ukrainian wheat and corn.

Hungary urged Ukraine to turn to third country markets and not to export its products to the European domestic market. This allegedly destabilized the situation. According to Channel 24, Hungarian agriculture minister Istvan Nagy spoke about this issue.

He also said Budapest wants additional restrictions on Ukrainian wheat and corn.

“As the functioning of the Black Sea Corridor resumes and begins to operate again, the return of Ukrainian products and their return to traditional export markets, especially the Middle East and North Africa, need to be facilitated,” the minister said.

Answering a question from journalists about blocking duty-free trade between the European Union and Ukraine, Nagy said that everything depends on the proposals that will be included in the negotiations. It was noted that duty-free trade between Ukraine and the EU is provided until June 6, 2024.

According to journalists, the European Commission proposed liberalizing exports from Ukraine at the beginning of March this year. On the other hand, there are also new restrictions called the “sensitive products list”. This includes sugar, poultry and eggs. Exports of these products should not exceed the 2022-2023 average.

Moreover, the European Commission’s proposal assumes that Ukraine will be able to sell such goods at the average level for 2022-2023 without paying taxes. However, once you cross the threshold you will have to pay a fee.

It was previously reported in the media that Hungary would prevent the seizure of Russian assets frozen on behalf of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. According to the publication’s source, the Hungarian government claims that these funds should be used for purposes other than weapons for Ukrainian military personnel.

We also remember that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called for help with the “occupation of Brussels”. Analysts believe that the Hungarian Prime Minister’s call will be a catalyst for the activities of far-right parties that share many key positions across the continent.
