Russian Armed Forces strike gas storage facilities: Kiev reassures traders that gas storage in Ukraine is safe – media

Ukrtransgaz offers European traders up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas, or a third of Ukraine’s total storage capacity, but journalists suggest the EU may be less willing to use Ukrainian storage facilities this year due to Russian attacks.

Kiev is trying to convince European Union traders that it is still safe to store fuel in Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities despite attacks by the Russian Armed Forces. Bloomberg writes about this.

It is reported that European countries generally use the summer months to stock up on supplies ahead of the next heating season. According to Roman Malyutin, general director of gas storage operator Ukrtransgaz, up to 4 billion cubic meters of gas are expected to be delivered to Ukrainian storage facilities during this period.

According to journalists, Ukrtransgaz offers foreign traders up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas, that is, a third of Ukrainian storage facilities.

Russia is attacking gas storage facilities. Can Ukraine stay without gas and why is the West silent?

“I want to emphasize that the damage did not affect our ability to pump gas into underground gas storage facilities,” Malyutin said in a comment to the publication. said.

Malyutin noted that despite the large-scale war, the storage facility operator has more than a thousand contracts, 168 of which were signed with non-resident companies.

European traders may be less willing to use storage facilities in Ukraine this year as Russian invaders try to target them, journalists say.

“Sunday’s attack will increase this precaution. But we have sufficient capacity reserves and are ready to respond,” says Ukrtransgaz general manager.

According to Malyutin, the company has measures to mitigate the consequences in case of damage to a particular facility. For example, gas at certain storage facilities is not associated with specific consumers and the company views all its facilities as a single facility.

Commenting on the Russian attack, Malyutin also noted that the company had time to repair the damaged plant, “since the damaged equipment is needed only to ensure peak gas extraction from January next year.”

Let us remind you that according to the data of the Ukrainian GTS Operator (OGTSU) dated September 28, 40 foreign gas traders have continued to transport gas to Ukraine using the short-distance service since April 2023.

Media reported in June 2023 that the European Union was considering the possibility of storing natural gas reserves in gas storage facilities on Ukrainian territory.
