Russians are trying to actively protect their bank cards from fraudsters. Insurance companies are seeing an increase in demand for anti-theft policies. One bank reported that this year, such insurance is purchased five times more than last year. How does it act in the battle with swindlers and how much will it help? Details are in the story. REN TV.

How to protect yourself from “bank employees”

No matter how much you send them to the black list, they immediately call back from other numbers. Almost everyone who has a bank card faces false bankers.

On a national scale, blocking calls from “bank employees” is handled by the information security department of the Bank of Russia. For six months, more than 190,000 phone numbers were blacklisted.

Salvation from swindlers is offered by insurance companies. A special service is the protection of accounts from theft of money. It works in three cases: if a bank card was stolen, forged or money was withdrawn from it by selecting personal data.

“The most important thing is covered – the criminal aspect of the theft of funds. That is, when there are some actions by third parties”– explains the vice-president of the All-Russian Union of Insurers Viktor Dubrovin.

Duplicated protection

This year, the demand for this type of insurance has increased many times, because the activity of scammers has increased. Although the Central Bank explains: the protection for which the insurance client pays – from a thousand rubles a year and more – duplicates the one that the bank is obliged to provide free of charge.

“The insurance coverage in most cases includes the same risks for which the client is entitled to receive compensation from the bank under the law “On the National Payment System”– noted in the Central Bank.

But in reality, neither one nor the other often helps to compensate for the lost. Indeed, in ninety percent of cases, money goes into the pockets of scammers because the cardholders themselves transfer confidential information to them – for example, secret pin codes, numbers from SMS messages.

“How many people wrote to us: “I had an insurance case, insurance against fraud. Why doesn’t this help me? Where is anyone who can help me?” The measures should be the same as in the 353rd law, when we completely solved the problem. What is the loan rate – everything is on the first page”– adds the project manager of the ONF “For the Rights of the Borrower” Evgenia Lazareva.

Other ways to protect

We need new ways to protect against scammers. Both the Central Bank and commercial banks agree with this. They are ready to help. One suggestion is to allow customers to set self-limits on lending.

“If one of the banks that serve you suddenly receives a loan application tomorrow, then he knows that you showed up as a person who does not plan loans. He will find out why you are going to take a loan”– says the president of the Association of Banks of Russia Garegin Tosunyan.

Other proposals include accelerating the exchange of information between credit institutions and law enforcement agencies. Plus, to determine the period during which banks will reimburse customers for the amount of transactions made without their consent. There is currently no set time for a return. In the meantime, initiatives are being considered, bank card holders should remember the main thing – if a stranger calls, just interrupt the conversation.
