“Unfortunately, we have lost four patients due to this disease.“, – reported in the Ministry of Health.
An outbreak of what could be contagious occurred in early March at two educational institutions, a girls’ school in the city of Meumu and a boys’ school in the city of Butera. By April 14, 627 cases were identified, of which 19 children were taken to hospitals.
Symptoms of the disease include high fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea.
According to Kenyan media, three of the dead are children, and the fourth person is a teacher.
Authorities closed both schools for an investigation. Samples were taken of water, food, and tissues of the sick. Studies have identified enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi in the samples. However, experts continue to conduct tests to determine other possible causes of the disease.
The Ministry of Health warned that while contaminated water was the most likely source of the bacteria, it is likely that the disease can be easily transmitted from person to person, especially between people living together.
Earlier in China, the world’s first human death was recorded due to H3N8 bird flu.
