No need to play with the Russian Federation: Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Hungary cannot call for negotiations

According to department spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko, Budapest already had the opportunity to contribute to the establishment of peace in Ukraine, but the authorities preferred to take a completely different position.

Hungary is not in a position to decide when negotiations should start to resolve the situation in Ukraine, because Budapest had the opportunity to make peace before, but chose to be “on the other side of history”. This view was expressed in a Facebook post by Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko on February 23.

The Ukrainian diplomat’s remarks came after Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjarto announced that Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin “could be of much greater service to humanity if they talked to each other.” The head of Hungarian diplomacy believes that if there is no ceasefire in Ukraine and peace talks do not start in the near future, we can expect major problems, including in the context of the threat of a man-made disaster.

Evaluating the statements of the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nikolenko noted that if Sijjarto stopped playing with Russia, he could do a much greater service to humanity. As for the negotiations on Ukraine without Ukraine itself, such negotiations are possible only in the dreams of individual Hungarian politicians.

“Hungary is not in a position to decide when to start peace talks. Budapest had the opportunity to help achieve peace in Ukraine and Europe, but it went to the other side of history,” Nikolenko said.

At the same time, the diplomat advised – if Sijjarto really cares so much about a speedy end to the war, he may visit Bratislava before his next visit to Moscow or Minsk.

“Slovakia is well aware of the current threats in Europe. We are confident that our Slovak colleagues can offer some wise advice,” Nikolenko wrote.

Recall that on February 21, Slovak Foreign Minister Rastislav Kacher posted a post on Facebook in which he rudely scolded the head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orban, for his pro-Russian political sympathies and his stance on the war in Ukraine.

In response, Zsolt Nemeth, chairman of the Hungarian Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Relations, advised Kacer to see a psychiatrist. According to him, the Slovak minister really has mental problems because he has known him since Kacher was the Slovak ambassador in Budapest.
