A commitment of UAH 30 million and an electronic bracelet: VAKS tightens restraint measure for Trukhanov

The Anti-Corruption High Court removed the preventive measure from being a personal bail obligation for the mayor of Odessa, who was accused of embezzlement from the sale of the Krayan factory.

On Tuesday, April 25, the Anti-Corruption High Court (VAKS) replaced the preventive measure against Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov with a bail of UAH 30.8 million. This was stated in Telegram by the press service of VAKS.

Therefore, the report says that Trukhanov must pay a bail of 30,866,000 hryvnia within five days. If bail is paid, the accused will be subject to certain obligations:

  • to fulfill any request in court;
  • not to leave the territory of Ukraine without the permission of the court;
  • to inform the court about the change of residence and workplace;
  • refrain from communicating with persons designated by the court;
  • depositing your passport with the State Immigration Service of Ukraine, other documents giving the right to leave Ukraine, for traveling abroad;
  • Install an electronic control device.

The mayor of Odessa has not yet responded to VAKS’s statement.

What is Trukhanov accused of?

Trukhanov was a suspect in the case of the Krayan factory. The investigation claimed that from July to December 2016, Trukhanov, together with Odessa City Council officials and some businessmen, embezzled UAH 185 million from the Odessa budget. According to law enforcement, the defendants bought the buildings of the bankrupt Krayan factory at an inflated price. They wanted to legalize the money through a business with fictitious signs, whose founder, according to the investigation, lived in the occupied territory of the Lugansk region.

In July 2019, the Odessa Malinovsky district court acquitted Trukhanov and other city council officials in the case of fraud related to the buildings of the Krayan factory. However, in February 2021, it was learned that the Appeals Chamber of the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court overturned this acquittal.
