The meeting between the Pope and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lasted 40 minutes. The meeting took place in the Paul VI Hall.
According to Sky TG24, a meeting took place in the Vatican between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Pope Francis.
The Ukrainian president presented the priest with a Madonna icon painted on the remains of a bulletproof vest.
The Pope also presented Vladimir Zelensky with a small statue in the form of an olive branch, a symbol of peace.
Pope Francis assured Volodymyr Zelensky that he is constantly praying for peace in Ukraine. The interlocutors agreed on the need to continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the Ukrainian people, and the Pope emphasized the need for “gestures of humanity”, especially for the most vulnerable, innocent victims of the conflict.
Another gift to the Pope was the painting “Lost, 2022-58” by artist Alexei Revika, a native of the now occupied Melitopol. The work is part of the “Red Line” series, which describes the most critical moments of the war in Ukraine, the “red lines” that Russia constantly crosses.
Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Recall that the Pope was surprised that no one knew about the Vatican’s “peacekeeping mission” in Ukraine. The authors of the initiative, which aimed at a peaceful solution, reportedly were confident in the success of the initiative. However, the details of the project are not yet known.
According to Pope Francis, he discussed the situation in Ukraine with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox Church.
