Stefanyshyn on Ukraine’s EU membership: We will be ready in two years

The Deputy Prime Minister believes that Ukraine can fulfill all the necessary conditions for accession to the European Union, even in wartime conditions.

Deputy Prime Minister for Europe and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna argues that hostilities will not prevent Ukraine from taking the necessary steps for EU membership, and that if Ukraine wins and Russia loses the war, entry into NATO will be quick. The official stated this in an interview published Tuesday (September 5th) on Voice of America.

“I am confident that Ukraine will be able to conduct effective negotiations, fulfill all obligations regarding the implementation of European standards, and most importantly, the restoration of the Ukrainian economy, will create conditions for the restoration of Ukraine. This will allow it to become a competitive member of the European Union,” said Stefanyshina.

The Deputy Prime Minister is confident that this will happen before 2030.

“We will be ready for European Union membership in the next two years, but of course the course of the war will determine the political framework for making this decision,” says Olga Stefanishina.

The Deputy Prime Minister believes that economically Ukraine is better prepared than the other candidates. Therefore, the decision to change status can be taken very quickly.

“Therefore, the European Union has already begun to revise its agricultural policy, which will adapt to the fact that new strong players will come to the EU common market and will actually become part of the market,” Stefanishina said.

Stefanishina’s accession to NATO is considered, above all, a political decision.

“I think we can join NATO faster because we await victory, the end of the war. And one of the strongest, strongest and most famous armies in the world will certainly be the biggest guarantor of Europe’s security.” and the entire European area,” Olga Stefanishina concluded.

Ukraine’s accession to the EU – what is known

In February 2022, a proposal was put forward by Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger to accept Ukraine into the EU under a special procedure. After that, Clément Bon, representing France in the EU, said that despite widespread support, there is no expedited procedure for Ukraine.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell stated that the war in Ukraine has become one of the incentives for the accelerated enlargement of the European Union.
