The head of state said the biggest difficulty in holding elections during war was security issues.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Ukrainian society is not ready to spend money on anything other than weapons. Therefore, there will be no new elections next year. The head of state stated this at a press conference in Canada.
According to Zelensky, the biggest difficulty in making elections during war is security issues. We are talking about the presence of observers, military voting on the ground, campaign financing, as well as ensuring the security of Ukrainians in the occupied territories and citizens of other countries.
“In Ukraine, rightly, today, when the parliament or the government wants to direct money in one direction or another, other than weapons, society is not ready to support it. Not only is it not ready, it opposes it to the end. Because a war is going on,” the president said.
The head of state said that the issue of elections was not raised even once as it was irrelevant due to security and war reasons. Moreover, Ukrainian legislation prohibits holding elections during war.
Note that Arizona Senator Mark Kelly said that Ukrainians should decide for themselves whether to hold an election. He objected to his colleague Lindsey Graham, who insisted on holding presidential elections in Ukraine next year.
“One of my colleagues called for an election. OK, I think it should be the decision of the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian president. That’s my view,” Kelly said.
Let’s remember, on August 24, American Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said at a press conference in Kiev that elections should be held in Ukraine in 2024. According to the politician, the elections should be held despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Advisor to the President of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mykhailo Podolyak noted on September 1 that presidential elections can be held in Ukraine in 2024, but this requires the help of international partners.
