People’s Deputy Inna Sovsun from the “Voice” party said that the decision to call women to military service was justified in that it was necessary for the needs of the state’s defense and to ensure justice.
The constitution stipulates that male military service is mandatory during martial law, but states that all Ukrainian citizens must participate in the defense of the state. This was stated by Golos party deputy Inna Sovsun in an interview with Emma Antonyuk.
The MP recalled that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky had previously spoken on the issue of women’s mobilization and assured that he would not sign the relevant law. However, Sovsun noted that the Constitution does not stipulate that only men should defend Ukraine.
“Our constitution says that all citizens of Ukraine must participate in state defense. It does not say only men or only women. Compulsory service is envisaged for men, but we wrote the duty to defend the state for everyone,” he said.
According to Sovsun, the decision to mobilize women is justified in terms of being necessary for the state’s defense needs and ensuring justice.
“If this is necessary for the defense of the state, if we say we cannot produce it without this, there is no picture we can produce without women… And also in terms of ensuring justice. … If there is a critical need for this for the defense of the state, and there will be no one to replace some of the people serving in the army,” the message says.
The people’s representative also noted that there were many women defending Ukraine on the front lines. However, he emphasized that military service is not just about service “in the direct line of communication,” adding that there are many positions in the rear that can be filled by women.
Let us remind you that on December 16, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced that there are currently 60 thousand military personnel in the Defense Forces. 40 thousand of them are on military duty. By the way, only in November 2023 did it become known that the authorities planned to purchase special women’s body armor for Ukrainian women. The purchase will be carried out in 2024 – until then 5 thousand women on the front lines will have to make do with other armor protection.
