UFC is working on organizing a duel between Makhachev and Volkanovski

UFC head Dana White assessed the chances of organizing a possible lightweight title fight between the organization’s lightweight champion Russian Islam Makhachev and UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski from Australia. His words are quoted by TMZ Sports.

“If a guy like Volkanovski comes to me and says he wants to fight, how can I refuse him? Look at the achievements of Alexander, how he rebuts the bets.” White said.

At the same time, the head of the UFC noted that the organization is still working on organizing the fight between Makhachev and Volkanovski. It is assumed that the fight between them for the lightweight title can take place in February next year at the next UFC 284 tournament, which is to be held in Australia.

Islam Makhachev had 24 fights in mixed martial arts (MMA) and won 23 times. Alexander Volkanovski has 25 victories in 26 fights.

We will remind, on October 22, Islam Makhachev became the new UFC lightweight champion, having won the fight with the Brazilian Charles Oliveira by choke. The athlete is now the second holder of the highest title in the division from Russia after Khabib Nurmagomedov. Makhachev dedicated his victory to coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. A couple of years ago in an interview “Izvestia” Khabib’s father predicted Makhachev’s championship in the UFC.

On October 23, Makhachev told what new goals he had: he wants to become the best fighter, regardless of the weight category. The head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, awarded the champion with the Order of Merit for the Republic of Dagestan.
