World Cup 2022 in Qatar: Moroccan goalkeeper explains why he sang the national anthem and decided not to play against Belgium

Morocco will deliver one of the many surprises of this World Cup in Qatar 2022 this Sunday by beating their Belgian counterpart 0-2. However, there was a strange episode when the goalkeeper of Morocco, Yassine Bono, sang the anthem, and was later replaced. The goalkeeper in question explained what had happened a few hours later.

In an interview for the radio program in Spain “El Partidazo de Cope”, the Sevilla FC player revealed that he was injured in the match against Croatia and in an attempt to play against Belgium he decided to infiltrate, but the treatment caused an adverse reaction.

“I went to the warm-up and decided that I would infiltrate just before the game so that the effect lasted for an hour and a half of the match, but I got dizzy 5 or 10 minutes after the injection,” he said.

“I was in the tunnel, I felt very strange, but I could not go back. I asked the coach if it was too late to change or not, and I told him that the main thing is not to lose the changes,” he explained.

Shortly thereafter, the goalkeeper decided to jump onto the grass to see if he could overcome the symptoms of discomfort. “I held on to fast moves. I was in a situation where I didn’t know what was happening and didn’t know how to act. I say let’s see if I go in and it disappears or I have to ask for change.”

It was at this point that a specific event occurred that caused the viral images to appear. “The change had to happen without the ability to do anything to prevent it.”

“When the anthem ends, the coach comes and says he will lose change. They took me to a room inside and did all the research on me and I stayed there until the game was over,” he said.

In images prior to his replacement, Bono is seen with his head down, with one hand on his knee and the other on his chest as the anthem is played. He was later replaced and the Moroccan team’s Twitter account announced the change but did not state the reason.

After this unusual situation, Morocco played the match at Al-Tumama Stadium and beat Belgium 0-2 thanks to goals from Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Abouhlal in the second half.

The African team is now the leader of Group F with four squads equal to Croatia. They are followed by Belgium with three points and Canada, already eliminated and still without points.
