Sergio Busquets has announced his retirement from the Spanish national team after relegation to Qatar in 2022 and 13 years at La Roja.

Sergio Busquets announced his retirement from the Spanish national team at the age of 34 after 13 years in the team that won the World Cup.

“I would like to thank all the people who have accompanied me on this long journey. With Vicente del Bosque, who gave me the opportunity to start, Luis Enrique for giving me pleasure until the last second,” said the Barcelona player.

Spain were eliminated in Qatar’s 2022 Round of 16 against Morocco on penalties. Sergio Busquets conceded one of the three penalties the Spanish team conceded and thus they were eliminated from the World Cup.

Busquets was one of the last competitors to win the South African World Cup in 2010 and then the European Championship in 2012. Busquets made his debut in 2009 at the behest of Vicente del Bosque, from there he earned himself a place in midfield with Javi Hernandez and Iniesta taking them to the top of the podium.

“It was an honor for me to represent my country and take it to the top, to become world and European champion, captain and play so many games, with more or less success, but always giving everything and doing your part, so that everything is as good as possible and that everyone feels how important they are, helping everyone and fighting for one goal, with a unique experience, unforgettable and historic,” he says.

Busquets made 143 appearances for the national team and scored two goals.s, in Eurocup qualification, during his 13 years as a member of La Roja. At 34, Busquets has a contract with Barcelona until June 2023.

“I still get goosebumps when I think about it. I will miss him very much (view squad list, use air transport, greet teammates, enjoy training, endless games of pocha, go out to play, but not before crying together, listening to the national anthem in an embrace or feeling the affection of the whole country),” he said.
