Patrice Evra, after retiring, has been on the world stage for conflicting reasons. The former French footballer is an avid social media user. although many times I don’t use them properly. Evra was fined for some homophobic statements made in 2019 after Paris Saint-Germain’s loss to Manchester United.
“Paris, they’re all fagots. They are all faggots… That’s what the men say”said the former France captain. His statements were circulated on social media and made a splash in 2019.
This behavior has been condemned by several associations: Mousse and stop homophobia. Both organizations characterized Evra’s words as “public insults against a group of people because of their sexual orientation”. Four years later, the complaint was successful and Evra was punished.
The Paris court sentenced the 41-year-old ex-player to a fine for $1,060 plus another $1,600 in damages to each of the affected associations.
“The homophobic words of a person like Patrice Evra incite hatred and violence against LGBT people.”, said Etienne Deschoulières, a lawyer representing the associations.
