The weather conditions did not contradict the regulations for the ten-kilometer ski race in Sochi, said Igor Belomestnov, technical delegate of the Russian Ski Racing Federation (RFSR).
“The start was given in accordance with the competition regulations, the weather conditions did not contradict the rules,” – TASS quotes him.
Belomestnov clarified that on the morning of March 8, it snowed heavily for two hours, which covered the ski track. By the time of the competition, the snowfall had stopped, but thick, partly cloudy conditions remained at the race site.
The FLGR delegate also reported that most of the victims received bruises during the race. The exact number of injured will become known later.
“Two athletes were seriously injured: one had a fractured forearm, the other had a head injury. All athletes returned to the hotel, the athlete with a head injury was left in the hospital for observation.”he added.
At the same time, Belomestnov commented on the situation with the men’s race. According to him, competitions among young men will be held on March 9 and instead of a mass start there will be a race with a time trial.
