Last few days, California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved legislation Advanced Clean Cars II which essentially puts an end to the sale of new endothermic vehicles starting in 2035 in California. This new legislation was already discussed in 2020 and after 2 years of work it was defined and approved. So California will adopt a strategy similar to that of the European Union, which we have talked about many times.

Governor of California Gavin Newsom noted that this new law is an important step towards the end of the internal combustion engine. The legislation proposed by the California Air Resources Board is very important because it could influence the decisions of other American countries. In fact, several other states have said they intend to follow California’s lead.

PROGRESSIVE PROGRESS

Clearly the law has been passed. provides a route in stages before putting an end to the sale of new endothermic vehicles. For example, in 2026, 35% of cars sold will have to be ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle). In 2028, this share will increase to 51%, and in 2030 to 68%. However, the new legislation provides that they can be Plug-in hybrids are also on sale with at least 50 miles of electric mileage. These vehicles will ultimately not need to account for more than 20% of automakers’ sales.

There is also a minimum mileage limit for electric vehicles. These vehicles must be equipped with a battery capable of driving at least 150 miles. The adopted legislation provides also some warranty and durability requirements batteries.

For example, after the 2030 model year, vehicles must maintain a range of at least 80% for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Between 2026 and 2035, combustion engine vehicles will also be more strictly regulated. What is approved obviously does not affect the used car market. In addition, gasoline cars on the roads will be able to continue to be used.

To comply with legislation that could also hit other US states, automakers will be asked to rethink their strategy to focus even more on electrified vehicles. In this regard, Ford has already declared its satisfaction with what was approved in California.
