Toyota closes its St. Petersburg plant in Russia September 24, 2022 0

Toyota decided to permanently cease operations in St. Petersburg plant in Russia. In fact, car production has already been suspended since March 4th due to supply chain issues that prevented us from having key components for car production.

Since then, the Japanese brand has been closely monitoring the situation to evaluate a possible resumption of business. Now, however, final stop arrived. In fact, after 6 months, Toyota sees no sign of resuming production at this plant. Although it is not explicitly stated, the consequences of the outbreak of war in Ukraine affect this decision.

Therefore, officially, given the impossibility of resuming production and the uncertainty of the future, Toyota has decided to close the plant. The decision, stresses the Japanese manufacturer, was not taken lightly. After the plant closes, the brand plans to reorganize its activities in Russia. Indeed, Toyota promised that will continue to offer support services for Toyota and Lexus models nationwide and to support its dealer network.

In addition, the brand indicated that it will support employees plant for reuse and reconstruction. There will also be a generous output. Recall that the Camry and RAV4 models were produced at the Toyota plant in Russia (production capacity of 100,000 vehicles per year).

What will happen to this plant now? Nothing concrete about this has been reported. But given what happened to the Renault plant, it is possible that a Russian company could buy it in order to return to the production of cars, but of other brands. Local authorities have already reported that they are evaluating various possibilities for the future of this plant. It remains only to wait for the arrival of news.
