The European Union evaluates sanctions for countries that are late on the graphs October 11, 2022 58

In recent days, the Transport and Tourism Commission of the European Parliament has approved a draft regulation as part of the “Fit for 55” package, which sets specific targets regarding the spread of charging infrastructure. According to the approved text, there should be stations for charging cars by 2026. every 60 km on main roads European.

Real purpose? It seems that this time the European Union may not want to limit itself to setting only goals that need to be achieved. In fact, according to the current text, the target for 2020 is to have 677,000 charging stations for cars and trucks. Instead, as of today, there are only 377,000. From the looks of it, it looks like MEPs can decide also include fines for countries that have not achieved their goals.

DO YOU RECEIVE PENALTIES?

This was reported by the German newspaper Spiegel, which says that Ismail Ertug, a European parliamentarian and rapporteur on the proposal voted by the Transport and Tourism Commission, explained that simply many EU countries have not submitted strategic plans. That is why the Commission has set 2024 as the deadline for Member States to submit a plan to build a charging infrastructure.

Given the “slowness” with which some countries move, a system of fines is being considered. From the looks of it, we would consider a €1,000 fine for each unidentified post. In addition, sanctions will be discussed against operators who do not serve stations “properly”, even if it is not clear exactly what this means. In any event, this “push” is intended to ensure that Member States avoid accumulating further delays.

Indeed, the rapid growth of charging infrastructure critical to the spread of electric vehicles. We have talked about this many times and have seen automakers asking the European authorities for clear and specific targets. Therefore, we will see if the European Union will indeed impose sanctions on countries that do not comply with the commitments made regarding the charging infrastructure.

However, it is clear that the European Union wants to do everything possible not to slow down the transition to electric mobility.
