France and Germany discuss plan to protect European automakers 28 October 2022 112

European Union is focusing squarely on electric vehicles as it will no longer be possible to buy new endothermic models from 2035. After US approvalInflation Reduction Act which basically allows to stimulate only electric cars made in the USA, for some time now some European politicians have been discussing the possibility of doing something similar here in order to protect the European auto industry from the arrival, in particular, of Chinese brands that offer battery models in the Old Continent market.

According to Bloomberg, French President Emmanuel Macron trying to get support German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for a new plan to help European automakers compete with the US and China. Paris and Berlin are reportedly in agreement that the European Union should do more to develop national industry.

SUPPORT FOR THE EUROPEAN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

In an interview on Wednesday with France 2 television after meeting Scholz in Paris, Macron said he was in favor of the idea of ensuring that the incentives were used only for European-made cars.

You have China and the US protecting their industries, but Europe remains open to all, we need to change. France and Germany have to stick together because we were too open, because many of our car manufacturers were selling a lot in China and didn’t want to close.

France is not the first time launches the idea of support only for cars made in Europe. Just a month ago, speaking about the new structure of US stimulus, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire proposed to “repay” the United States with the same currency.

On the “problem” with the US, in fact, we are trying to find a solution, given that the EU and the US government are in dialogue. Moreover, agreeing on a common strategy with all the individual EU countries will be very difficult, even with Germany and France to move forward with an agreement.

In addition, offering incentive schemes only for the European automotive industry could violate some of the EU’s existing trade rules. Therefore, what Macron said seems more like a provocation than a project that one really wants to continue. In any case, it looks like we should wait for the result of the mediation with the US government, which will be carried out by the EU-US task force, before returning to the discussion of this issue again.
