Volkswagen’s electrification plan is very ambitious. It all started with the Volkswagen ID.3, the first new generation electric vehicle in the ID family, OIE platform which will later be used for other battery-powered vehicles of the German brand. Deliveries of the ID.3 began in October 2020. Now, just over two years later and a year earlier than originally planned, Volkswagen has announced that delivering 500,000 vehicles family IDs around the world.
The manufacturer notes that this is an important result, especially considering supply chain issues which slow down the production of new cars. In addition, the brand says that order book remains wide enough.
We are doing our best to deliver approximately 135,000 ID cards ordered by our customers as quickly as possible. However, due to the still difficult situation with the supply of components, production has to be repeatedly adjusted.
As a reminder, currently the electric range of the Volkswagen ID family consists of the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.6 models, even if this model is only available in China. A range that, however, will expand over the next few years with the introduction of new models. In fact, the German brand has announced that it will introduce 10 new battery-powered models by 2026.
Volkswagen will have the most extensive portfolio of electric vehicles in the automotive industry, from an entry-level electric vehicle with a target price of less than 25,000 euros to the new flagship Aero B, we will have the right offer in every segment.
Volkswagen will produce electric vehicles only in Europe starting from 2033. By 2030, all-electric models will account for at least 70% of Volkswagen’s sales in Europe. In the US and China, the company plans to increase the share of electric vehicles by more than 50% over the same period.
One of the cornerstones of Volkswagen’s electric strategy is precisely the MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform. Specifically designed for EVs only, it offers significant economies of scale to reduce development and production costs for new models.
