AeroScope is based on technology to decode and analyze communication protocols between the control room and commercial DJI UAVs such as the Mavic quadcopter family. The complex allows you to find the drone model, serial number, location, speed, direction and flight altitude, and the launch site and the coordinates of the operator, the e-mail with which the device is registered.
Chinese manufacturer DJI offers two fixed (G-8 and G-16) and portable (AeroScope Mobile) versions of its AeroScope systems. They were originally designed to protect indoor facilities such as airports and stadiums from drone intrusion and criminal searches. According to Information Resistance, the company supplies Russia with complexes, they are used by various military units of the RF Armed Forces and National Guard.
The first case of using the AeroScope by the Russians was recorded on October 28, after which it was used at least three times in one of the hostilities. As a rule, the complex is served by three people: the commander, the operator and the driver of the vehicle in which it is transported. They determine the positions of the Ukrainian operators and transmit information to the artillery, who opened fire at the determined coordinates in about 10 minutes.
Analysts suggest that the Russian military will try to increase the effectiveness of AeroScope at the front. The command can directly subordinate the groups using the complexes to the artillery units or even include them to reduce the reaction time.
In addition, the RF Armed Forces can shoot at UAV landing sites, because attacking take-off areas often does not bring results – operators act quickly. Together with AeroScope, Ukraine can use drones with operators to intercept drones.
The State Special Communications Service announced the use of the AeroScope by the Russians in April, HiTech Expert reported. In March, various sources reported that DJI turned off AeroScope for Ukraine, but the technology continues to work with complexes purchased by Russia – this is demonstrated by massive artillery attacks on the launch points of DJI drones used by the Ukrainian military.
On March 7, Taras Troyak, head of the All Ukraine Federation of Drone Owners, reported on Facebook that almost all AeroScope systems delivered to Ukraine before the war “strangely” stopped working wherever they were used, including nuclear power. plants.
