The Bimini Road, also known as the Bimini Wall, is a road made up of large angular blocks of beach stone, each about 4 meters long. The underwater path runs parallel to two small paths and eventually curves slightly, forming a kind of hook. Interestingly, the blocks that make up the Bimini Road lie side by side in an extremely regular manner along its base, which once appeared to have equal angles created by man and softened by natural erosion over time.
But researchers believe the underwater path itself was once a rock that was the result of rising sea levels. Scientists believe that the once large layer of rock broke up into the pieces we see today.
The Bimini Road is assumed to be a well “cemented” sedimentary rock that forms fairly quickly from a mixture of materials. The researchers note that the rocks that make up the underwater pathway are made up of small mud clumps (peloids), sand, shell fragments, remains of Cambrian protozoa, and codian algae.
In 1978, scientists from the University of Miami’s Department of Geology used radiocarbon dating to evaluate rock samples that make up the Bimini Road – findings suggest the road was formed about 2,000 years ago. Today, researchers are also using this data to rule out any association with Atlantis, which is presumed to have sunk about 12,000 years ago.
