American astronomers have presented their new work in which they more accurately calculate the distances and temperatures to 191 giant stars. They also got 3 times more accurate data on the diameters of these giant stars and learned their true colors.

Giant stars are stars that have nearly exhausted the hydrogen fuel needed for nuclear fusion in their cores. Thanks to this synthesis, stars receive their energy and exist. But in such stars, at the end of their life, the hydrogen shell around their core burns off and they move on to burning helium, the next final stage of a star’s thermonuclear fusion.

According to scientists, all the stars studied are either in the phase of burning the hydrogen shell of the core or burning the helium inside.

There are not only giant stars in the universe, but also supergiant stars, although they only make up 5% of all stars in space. However, 30% of all stars visible from Earth belong to these two star classes. The thing is, it’s their incredibly high brightness that allows you to see them even with the naked eye. According to Bell, at the end of their lives, temperatures in the cores of supergiants are much higher than temperatures in the cores of giant stars. But supergiants die much faster and when fusion ends they are highly compressed and explode in supernovas.

Coming to the final stage of our Sun’s life, scientists have determined that when the hydrogen shell in the star’s core begins to burn, it will reach 80 times the Sun’s current size. Then the burning of helium in the core of the star will start in the core and the size of the Sun will decrease for a while. But another 200 million years will pass and the Sun will grow 300 times, turn into a giant star and die.

The death of the Sun will represent the following process:

• The Sun will reach its final size when thermonuclear fusion ends in its core and transforms into a red giant;
• As a result of this expansion, Mercury, Venus and Earth will disappear;
• In the last stage of the Sun’s life, its outer shell will fly into space, and the star itself will turn into a cooling, dim, very dense dead star – a white dwarf.
