Scammers have learned to give old video cards like new ones: what to look for

After mining, video chips have flooded the market, but their acquisition threatens with great risks.

Due to the decline of the cryptocurrency market and the changing paradigm of mining, it’s no secret that many miners are getting rid of their old video cards and selling them at affordable prices. But even then, not many people want to buy them, writes Tomshardware.

This is due to the fact that such video cards are used in the most severe conditions, such as increased frequencies and overheating in 24/7 mode, which threatens to fail quickly and potential buyers know about it.

That’s why miners came up with a new trick to deceive idiots and show their video cards as “almost unused”. The fact is that due to constant overheating, the memory chips of the video card and branded and technical inscriptions on the chips turn yellow, and careful users pay attention to this factor as a sign that the card is used for mining. Therefore, scammers began to repaint the inscription and chips, updating them so that they look fresh. Experts say that there are many such video cards on Aliexpress, and not only on bulletin boards.

In principle, yellowing inscriptions and chips from overheating is not the only indicator that the video chip is driven “both in the tail and in the mane.” Experts recommend paying attention to PCB dust deposits, worn warranty labels, scratches, oxidized contacts, and slight discoloration. Also, the fact that the card has been used for a long time is indicated by a slightly darker GPU substrate and yellowed lettering on the video card’s memory chips.

By the way, missing screws and removed warranty marks are also an indication that the video card has been repaired or disassembled, but on the other hand, this may be because the previous owner used a more powerful cooling system.

Experts recommend paying attention to the GPU substrate, because it is difficult to repaint, and almost no one does this, unlike repainting the text and cleaning the video card itself from dirt and dust.
