Audi thinks about (electric) rival Defender and G-Class January 30, 2023 9

Audi will evaluate the green light for a new project that will lead to the creation of one vehicle with strong off-road abilitywho will compete with Land Rover Defender and Mercedes G-class. A model that will be electric and which may become a reality, however, only after a few years. i.e. in 2027. So, at least, says Autocar, who had the opportunity to talk with the head of the design department of the German company. Mark Lichteafter the presentation of the electric concept car Activesphere.

This new model will allow the 4 ring house to reach new market segments. Development will be facilitated by the exchange of technologies and platforms within the Group.

WHAT PLATFORM?

The project is separate from the Activesphere concept car, although this vehicle is designed to tackle all types of terrain. 2027 is still a long way off, and therefore there will certainly be an opportunity to get more information about the project. However, Mark Lichte, without going into details, claims that this car will not use the PPE platform. The platform of the new Ford Ranger, which holds the new Volkswagen Amarok pickup, will also not be used.

If the new model does arrive in 2027, it won’t even be able to take advantage of the German group’s new SSP platform as it won’t arrive until 2028. Therefore, Lichte limited himself to stating that the new model will use a different platform from the Volkswagen Group. At this point, one might think that, given the type of vehicle, a platform could be chosen for Scout-branded electric vehicles to be launched in the US market. These are pickup trucks and SUVs designed for American buyers with all-wheel drive and therefore strong off-road capabilities.

Scouts

It’s speculation at this point, but the platforms of these cars are a good fit for Audi’s needs. In addition, according to the report, Audi will not be directly involved in the production of this new electric vehicle. Indeed, the house of 4 rings will work with Magna for the development of some parts of the Scout models. Thus, the Volkswagen Group could force Magna to produce models under the Scout and Audi brands.

In addition, the experience gained in Dakar, where the manufacturer was present in the last two races, could be transferred to this car from the 4-ring house to offer customers off-road capabilities of the highest level. Therefore, it remains only to wait for news on this project.
