“Efficiency of up to 97%”: in Russia they boast of the invention of “cartridges” against UAVs

According to Russian scientists, the bullet should discharge the battery, “burn” the electronics, paint over the cameras and pierce the drone with shrapnel.

Penza State University in Russia announced the invention of a new technology for the destruction of drones. Details are published on the website of the educational institution.

Russian scientists patented two methods of suppressing UAVs: “functional” and “two-factor”. The technology is based on a special “cartridge” containing an electromagnetic charge, a miniature self-explosive charge with a radio detonator and a highly dispersed paint roller. According to the scientists, the complex method will allow small drones with “several damaging factors” that also move at different times to be destroyed with an efficiency of up to 97%.

The developers offer to launch ammo using various launchers. At a distance of 50-100 m from the drone, the cartridge will create a “cloud” designed to eliminate the target. A series of radio pulses with a duration of a few nanoseconds should discharge the battery of the drone, a strong electromagnetic pulse – to disable the electronics, paint – to cover the blinds, cameras, and the parts will scatter over a long distance, causing damage to the body. As the scientists assure, at least one of the four factors will work.

Professor Nikolai Yurkov commented, “The scheme of our invention can be compared to a shotgun shot. The chances of destroying a plane increase several times.”

Russian inventors added that the technology could be applied in the air defense system to protect critical facilities in the future. It is also proposed to be adopted by the power structures of the Russian Federation.

After a series of explosions at military installations in late 2022, the Russians are actively looking for effective technologies to protect against drones. In December, it was reported that it was decided to protect fuel and power facilities with the help of Serp-VS systems, which suppress UAV control channels, including GPS and Wi-Fi.

Russia also announced the development of new Burdock radar stations designed to detect drones. They were sent for testing in the war zone on the territory of Ukraine.

In January, the Russians patented a new drone with an EMP projectile to destroy drones and other equipment. The device itself, with the help of a jet engine, must rise to great heights and then drop the ammunition on the target, which disables the electronics during an explosion.
