Each foot of the SPIDAR robot has four propellers, which are used for both walking and flying.
Gizmodo writes that scientists at the University of Tokyo have created a SPIDAR robot that embodies the abilities of a spider and a dragonfly. Thanks to the four legs and sixteen motors on it, the spider robot can overcome various obstacles.
This robot, if refined, will be able to carry a payload, such as equipment necessary for reconnaissance. The “spider” can lie completely on the “belly” and thus climb into hard-to-reach places. When it is necessary to fly around an obstacle or climb as high as possible, SPIDAR will use all of its 16 servos.
Servo drives are also used so that the spider robot can simply walk, and scientists still see the main drawback in this – the robot moves quite slowly because it has to “steer” the servos and use them to move its legs.
But scientists at the University of Tokyo believe that spider robots could inspire drone manufacturers with new ideas. For example, developing a model of a UAV that not only flies, but also moves on the ground. Or, if necessary, it makes a softer landing with the help of its feet. In any case, experts promise to continue working on SPIDAR and perhaps turn it into a real spider-drone.
