Data collected by Apple Watch shows thousands of users are sleeping less than recommended

Scientists from Harvard University have published a new study called “Apple Heart & Movement Study” in which used data collected by Apple Watch to study the sleep patterns of thousands of users.. The results of the study are at least extremely interesting, because they show how people relax.

The study involved 42,000 Apple Watch users., and for each of them about 40 nights of sleep were analyzed, totaling about 3 million hours of sleep. The researchers found that on average participants slept 6 hours and 27 minutes daily.

This figure represents less than the minimum of 7 hours recommended by experts. Among the results of the study, 68.8% of the participants slept less than the recommended minimum of 7 hours, and 31.2% exceeded the recommended hours of sleep. These results are worrisome, as sleep deprivation can have long-term negative health effects.

Another important finding of the study was that people with more unstable sleep patterns tend to have higher body mass index (BMI). This suggests that sleep quality may be related to body weight.

sleep monitoring

The Apple Watch sleep monitoring feature uses a combination of sensors, algorithms, and data analysis to collect information about the wearer’s sleep. and provide you with a detailed view of the quality and nature of your sleep.

To start tracking sleep, you need to turn on the sleep monitoring feature in the Health app on your iPhone and wear your Apple Watch while you sleep. At night, the watch uses the accelerometer and gyroscope to detect the wearer’s movements, such as heart rate and breathing. The watch then writes this data to the Health app.

Once the user wakes up, they can check their Apple Watch or iPhone to get a summary of their sleep. The Health app provides detailed information about total sleep time, time spent in each sleep stage (light, deep and REM sleep).as well as information about when the user woke up during the night.

In addition, the Health app also can give personalized advice on how to improve sleep qualityfor example, establish a regular sleep pattern and reduce exposure to blue light before bed.
