ABT e-Line and WiTricity together for wireless charging of electric vehicles March 23, 2023 0

Wireless charging for electric vehicles this is an interesting option that some companies in the automotive sector are experimenting with to be able to offer it on cars in the future. The goal is to make refueling easier, because with this system there is no need to physically connect the car to the speaker through inconvenient cables.

Now the news has come that ABT e-Line and WiTricity will work together to offer a package that allows cars to have wireless charging. Considering the skills acquired by ABT with Volkswagen Group cars, we will leave with Volkswagen ID.4.

IT BEGINS IN 2024

Thanks to ABT e-Line’s experience in car tuning and WiTricity’s experience in wireless charging, as of early 2024 this technology could be implemented in Volkswagen’s electric SUV. Obviously, both companies will not stop at the ID.4. In fact, there is a willingness to offer this technology on other Volkswagen Group battery-powered models, including the Audi e-Tron GT, Porsche Taycan and Volkswagen ID. Hum. Over time, the offer will expand to other electric models.

Through this collaboration, both companies also aim to accelerate the spread of this technology for charging in Europe. No further details have been released about the kit that will be offered to enable wireless charging. More detailed information will appear later. Of course, there will be some sort of “receiver” installed on the cars, which will allow the energy from the charging pad located on the garage floor to be transferred to the battery. Pad, which will likely be offered as part of the package.

Therefore, it will be enough to park the car so that the “receiver” is located above the site in order to start the power supply. WiTricity recalls that the wireless charging standard for electric vehicles was ratified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in 2020 and is largely based on its developments. Therefore, for cars, a guarantee of maximum compatibility even with wireless charging solutions from other manufacturers that meet the same standard.

Therefore, it remains only to wait for additional information about this project. Recall that among the many projects focused on this technology, there is the Stellantis project, which recently entered into an agreement with HEVO. Initially, the potential for wireless charging will be tested on the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, but the ultimate goal is to offer the technology on some of the Group’s electric models.
