Hypothetical ‘strange star’ discovered in space: no such object has yet been found

Astronomers believe they have discovered an unusual object in deep space, thought to be a neutron star.

A new study by scientists from Brazil suggests it’s possible to detect a hypothetical “strange star” for the first time. It belongs to the class of quark stars and has not yet been found. ScienceAlert writes that some scientists generally believe they cannot exist.

Scientists from the University of São Paulo continued to study an unusual object that was studied by astronomers from Germany last year. As already written Focus, Later, scientists announced that they had discovered an unusual neutron star at the center of a supernova remnant named HESS J1731-347.

A new study suggests that this neutron star may actually be the first discovered member of a hypothetical class of stars called quark stars.

Not exceeding the size of a 10 km sphere, this incredibly compact star has the smallest mass of any known neutron star. As previous study has shown, the mass of a star located 8150 light-years from us is equivalent to 77% of the mass of the Sun.

This is surprising, however, because astronomers believe neutron stars may have the smallest mass equivalent to 1.17 solar masses. In other words, it is a very strange object and neutron stars cannot have such a small mass.

Neutron stars are very dense remnants of dead massive stars with incredibly high density and very small size. These stars are made up of neutrons, hence their name.

According to the authors of the new study, the star found in supernova remnant HESS J1731-347 may not be a neutron star at all, it is made up of quark-like particles and is accordingly a quark star.

Astronomers now speculate that such “strange stars” may exist in space, but they have never been found. Some scientists generally believe that such stars do not exist. However, Brazilian researchers suggest that the unusually compact object has all the characteristics of a quark star and could be a quark star.

Quarks are the fundamental particles that make up the protons and neutrons in the nuclei of atoms. Some scientists believe that under the influence of enormous pressure, quarks can form a new form of matter – quark matter.

Until now, scientists do not know how this very dense body, which theoretically consists mainly of quarks, could have arisen as a result of a supernova explosion. Scientists have some assumptions they want to test.

At the same time, Brazilian astronomers say it’s too early to say they’ve actually discovered the first quark star. So far everything points to this fact, but additional observations of the strange object are needed.

Focus He also wrote that astronomers put an end to the long-standing dispute about the Sun. As strange as it may sound, scientists have discovered that the Sun is indeed an ordinary star similar to itself.
