Class A Mercedes restyling, first contact. How fast an AMG goes April 13, 2023 17

The history of the Mercedes A-Class began in 1997 as a “small” MPV. Over time, this model has grown, becoming the compact hatchback (there is also a sedan version) that we all know. It is still unclear what its future will be, as Mercedes intends to overhaul its vehicle lineup.

Meanwhile, the current generation of the A-Class has just undergone a facelift that brings few aesthetic changes but various substantive innovations, especially in terms of technology and engines. The Italian market is very important for the A-Class: since 2012, i.e. since the introduction of the third generation in compact hatchback form, 141,500 units have been sold, of which 4,000 AMG versions from 2013 and 4,000 plug-ins from 2013. 2020.

The arrival of restyling was an opportunity to conduct the first short test drive of the new model. Several tens of kilometers, which allowed us to get the very first impression of the car, waiting for the opportunity to test it more calmly.

HOW THE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR IS CHANGING

We remember the main novelties of restyling which we have talked about a lot in the past. From a design standpoint, the facelift is conservative and requires a trained eye to immediately recognize aesthetic innovations. The front end has been slightly redesigned with some changes to the grille, headlights and bumper. The grille, in particular, has been redesigned with a star design. At the back, however, Mercedes has retouched the diffuser and headlights. In addition, a new design of alloy wheels up to 19 inches was introduced. We also find shiny black alloy wheels for the AMG versions. The new A-Class also offers a new choice of exterior colours.

As for the interior, the infotainment screen is still 10.25 inches and the instrument screen is 7 inches, with the option of 10.25 inches as an option. of course mercedes introduced the latest version of the MBUX system which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Among the new features, currently only available in Germany, is the new “Tourguide” function of the MBUX system, which reads information about points of interest along the route. Along with the facelift, Mercedes also introduced a new nappa leather steering wheel. In addition, the German manufacturer has redesigned the center console.

Starting with the basic equipment, the A-Class is equipped with seats with the new ARTICO upholstery. The AMG Line versions can count on a number of special details that recall the model’s sporty character, such as bright brushed aluminum trim and contrasting red stitching on the ARTICO/MICROCUT seats.

ENGINES

After restyling, all gasoline engines are now equipped with a mild hybrid system. The A-Class is also still offered with diesel engines. Depending on the model, the transmission is 7- or 8-speed automatic.

  • Petrol versions: A 180 (100 kW / 136 hp); A 200 (120 kW / 163 hp); A 220 4MATIC (140 kW / 190 hp); A 250 4MATIC (165 kW / 224 hp)
  • Diesel versions: A 180 d (85 kW/116 hp); A 200 d (110 kW / 150 hp); A 220 d (140 kW/190 hp)

Also introduce Insert model (A 250 e) whose transmission has been revised and can rely on a 120 kW / 163 hp petrol engine. in combination with an 80 kW / 109 hp electric motor. for a maximum system output of 160 kW / 218 hp from 450 Nm. a battery that provides a range of up to 81 km on the WLTP cycle. A battery that can charge up to 11 kW of power in alternating current (optional, standard 3.7 kW). Optional DC charging support (power up to 22 kW).

There are two versions signed by AMG: Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC and Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+. The former can be powered by a Mild Hybrid 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine with 225/306 hp, while the latter can rely on a 310 kW/421 hp 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine.

VERY FAST AMG

For this short test drive, just under 30 km between state roads and hilly sections near Bologna, we chose the “worst” class A version, namely Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+a model that you get into and then never want to get off because it’s fun to drive.

Of course, given the price and performance, this is a model for the few, but this time we wanted “please heartand experience a car capable of truly exciting every turn. Once on board, you immediately feel at ease, and thanks to the ability to adjust the sports seat with millimeter precision, you can find the right position behind the wheel in a matter of seconds. the steering wheel must be studied with a little care as it is “overflowing” with commands. Otherwise, we find the usually very high quality that characterizes Mercedes cockpits.

The Mercedes AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ can also be handled without problems in urban areas, in continuous traffic with stops, but it becomes immediately clear that this is not its natural environment. Actually, it was on the hills near Bologna that we were able to test the potential of this model, appreciating the great work done by the German manufacturer.

The limits are so high that it would be better to be able to test the car on the track. Unfortunately, this was not possible and we “had to make do” with the curves of the hills of Bologna, where we had to be careful not to overdo it, because the Mercedes AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ allows you to reach unacceptable speeds in just a few seconds. .

The merit, of course, belongs to the setting and all-wheel drive, as well as the engine, which with its 421 hp and 500 Nm of torque always pushing. Also flawless 8-speed automatic transmissionalways ready and shifts gears very quickly.

Part of the test was carried out in the “Comfort” driving mode. Already so, the car is very fast, but choosing Sport or Sport+ mode it changes character and looks almost like another model. Mercedes AMG A 45 S 4MATIC + becomes much meaner and more fun. The compact from Affalterbach is made for driving, and it’s a pity that the test drive was so short. One could try a lot and talk about the car, which certainly will not go unnoticed.

Yes, because in addition to being very fast, it also has an aerodynamic body kit that allows you to immediately recognize it.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the expense, but those lucky ones who buy an AMG version with such capacities probably pay little attention to this aspect. Also, our short test drive certainly wasn’t the best fuel consumption test as we were making the most of the engine’s potential. In short, the collected data will only reflect the “happy” use of the car on the route, so it does not make much sense to report this. Anyway, officially Mercedes-AMG claims 9.2–8.8 liters per 100 km on the WLTP cycle.

PRICES

Mercedes emphasizes that it has simplified the logic of offering equipment packages in order to cut down on the lengthy selection of many individual options.

In Italy I prices start from 35,120 euros for model Classe A 180 (gasoline). The model we used for the test drive starts at 68,182 euros.
