The Russians learned how to protect military drones from electronic warfare, but found a way out in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Expert Sergei Flash believes that the “Kometa-M” modules protect UAVs from “scramblers” at the level of NATO equipment.

Russia has begun installing Kometa-M antennas on its Orlan series of unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and guided bombs to protect them from interference with satellite communications. This was announced by a Ukrainian soldier and electronic warfare expert on his Facebook page under the pseudonym Sergey Flash.

According to him, NATO has long understood the important role of satellite navigation for the military and began to look for ways to protect on-board systems from electronic warfare jammers. Western experts have created a specially coded signal with an M-code and a separate satellite link, inaccessible to anyone in the world except the US Army. Controlled receiving antennas (CRPA) became the second method of shielding that can suppress interference by changing the antenna scheme and signal analysis algorithms.

Russia went the second way and created a shielded antenna “Kometa-M”, which corresponds to the safety of NATO receivers. However, CRPA systems have limitations on the number of EW sources that can be neutralized simultaneously.

“Comet has this number 3. So we are crushing Orlan with our four Bukovel EW machines scattered to the sides, but it is difficult to do this organizationally. Yes, and it only makes zero sense. EW for navigation, because Orlan takes autonomous flight”, – explained Sergey Flash.

Russia also announced the creation of the Stena-E1 aviation anti-jamming navigation system, a CRPA for drones. Sergei Flash drew attention to the fact that it should be based on three electronic warfare vehicles, such as the Kometa-M.

Earlier, Sergei Flash said which Russian drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine can “jam” with electronic warfare. Even properly configured home-made systems can suppress the Orlan control system, but not the GPS. However, such drones continue to fly until they leave the EW coverage area, even without communicating with the operator.
