BlueWhale uses radar and electro-optical systems to detect marine and coastal targets.
According to GDH Digital, Israel has announced its new development in the field of underwater technology, an unmanned mini-submarine BlueWhale. This is the most modern 12 meter long vessel capable of performing various tasks in the water.
The autonomous submarine BlueWhale can swim to a depth of 100 m and reach speeds of up to 27 km/h. Engineers equipped the submarine with a variety of sensors, cameras and communication tools that allow it to transmit information to shore or other underwater objects. The submarine can also carry small cargo or weapons on board.
According to the developers, BlueWhale “uses radar and electro-optical systems attached to a telescopic mast” to detect marine and coastal targets. The mini-sub was also equipped with “special sonar and mapping mines on the seafloor to detect both manned and unmanned submarines.”
BlueWhale can stay at sea for weeks at minimal cost and without an operator.
While he did not specify which intelligence sites the submarine is currently monitoring, the two main targets of Israeli naval intelligence are the Gaza Strip coast and the Lebanese coast.
As the BlueWhale developers say, this is another step for Israel towards creating an effective and resilient security system that can counter various threats in the region.
