Sources of chemicals in the eyes: scientists warn of the dangers of contact lenses

The study shows dangerous findings in nearly two dozen popular contact lens brands.

Science Alert writes that an EPA-approved lab conducted a study on dozens of popular contact lens manufacturers and found something disturbing.

The results of the study show signs of “eternal chemicals” in contact lenses of 18 popular brands. The researchers note that all samples contained traces of organic fluorine, which is also a marker for PFAS, ranging from 105 parts per million (ppm) to 20,700 parts per million.

Keep in mind that the EPA currently only monitors PFAS levels when they enter drinking water, but their actual production is not controlled, so the effect on the human body is still unknown. Pete Myers, chief scientist in the Department of Environmental Sciences, said comparisons between safe levels of “eternal chemicals” in water and contact lenses are inherently flawed, but the results of the study are still troubling. The truth is, the analysis showed that all contact lenses tested exceeded 100 ppm, actually 50,000 times higher than the highest level considered safe for drinking water.

Note that PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyls) are a group of widely used synthetic chemicals that are water and oil resistant. This indicates that it is extremely difficult for them to decompose in the environment.

Previous research shows that “timeless chemicals” are already widely distributed around the world – they have previously been found in:

  • water resources;
  • Raindrops;
  • soil;
  • animals;
  • people.

As in the example of microplastics flooding the planet, scientists are trying to understand what effect these “eternal chemicals” have on our health and at what concentrations are dangerous to humans. Unfortunately, scientists are still looking for answers to these questions.

However, previous research has already shown that some PFASs are associated with a higher risk of cancer and immune system problems. The researchers note that the results of this analysis are cause for concern because it actually means that millions of eyes around the world come into contact with potentially harmful chemicals every day.
