‘Battery tanker’ being built in Japan to power 70,000 homes

The unusual PowerX ship will begin navigating the islands in three years.

In Japan, PowerX is preparing to build an extraordinary ship that will run on batteries and carry clean electricity across the sea, according to New Atlas. The idea behind such a project is that renewable energy is often far from where it’s needed most, and PowerX delivers it when it’s needed.

The essence of the project is that Japan is surrounded by water and is prone to earthquakes, and “will help the ship power the troubled islands that remain without power until they are reconnected to the power grid,” the company said in a press release.

The “battery tanker” prototype is planned to be produced in 2025 and tested in 2026. It will be 140 meters long and will have a renewable energy capacity of 241 megawatt-hours. On board will be 96 container modules with controllers and chargers, as well as lithium-iron-phosphate batteries.

The movement of the ship requires a lot of energy, so the maximum cruising range will be only 300 km before consuming too much electricity. The ship will be equipped with gas emission control and fire suppression systems, which are critically needed given that lithium-ion batteries pose a fire hazard.

The company plans to build several types of ships and equip them with large solar panels. The power of the batteries that the ship will be equipped with will be enough to power approximately 70,000 homes for one day on average.

Previously Focus reported that scientists have created flexible solar panels: they can be folded like a sheet of paper.
