Accompanied by instructors, divers can now explore the extensive collection of amphorae that stretches an impressive 25 meters along the seabed. Previously, access to these underwater artifacts was restricted to archaeologists and people with special permits due to concerns about looting.
Now amateur divers can go to the depths of the sea and meet the legendary “Peristera”. Named after a nearby uninhabited island, this shipwreck dates back to BC.
The wreck was discovered in 1985, when a fisherman stumbled upon an old boat off the rocky west coast of Peristera. At a depth of 28 meters lay a large merchant ship, probably from Athens, which found its death. Thousands of amphorae from the ancient cities of Halkidiki, Mendi, and Peparitos, known today as Skopelos, witnessed the ancient wine regions filled with wine.
The Peristeria shipwreck, which was of great importance in classical antiquity, exceeded all expectations, revealing the existence of large ships measuring 12 by 25 meters, which were previously thought to have been first built during the Roman Empire. Pari Kalamara, director of the Greek Underwater Antiquities Ephorate, emphasized the importance of the Peristera shipwreck, stating that he documented the existence of such ships in the second half of the 5th century BC.
It should be noted that the ship maintains its structural integrity quite well. The amphora cargo remained intact by being arranged in layers reflecting its original placement in the ship’s hold, giving an idea of the ship’s shape. Calamara explained: “Seeing a ship from the classical era is a truly unique experience for diving visitors.”
Examination of the sunken ship was carried out by archaeologists and employees of the Ministry of Culture’s Department of Marine Antiquities, who coordinated the public exploration of the site. The Peristera shipwreck will capture the imagination of any experienced diver, with its numerous amphorae located within the Alonissos National Marine Park conservation area, its remarkably well-preserved condition and the stunning charm of the surrounding virgin waters.
However, the attraction of the mysterious underwater world is not limited to diving enthusiasts. Visitors to Alonissos have the opportunity to see the extraordinary view of a sunken ship without even getting wet.
