In service since 2009, the JASSM missile is a long-range, precision-guided air-to-ground missile designed to destroy heavily defended, fixed and mobile targets valuable to US and allied forces. According to the publication, the JASSM has a range of 370 km, while the extended range of the JASSM-ER is 997 km.
Engineers plan to double the range of the 2267-kilogram JASSM-ER AGM-158D to 1930 km and equip it with a 907 kg explosive warhead. To do this, developers will need to refine the design of the wing, install a new, more advanced missile control unit, apply an innovative paint job and integrate a more powerful GPS receiver. Deliveries of the first AGM-158Ds are scheduled for January 2024.
