An ordinary smartphone has caught the cosmic 4G Internet: how was it achieved?

Initially, the telecom operator planned to transmit a signal for 5G phones, but it turned out that traditional devices can also receive satellite Internet.

The Verge reports that Texas-based AST SpaceMobile is testing the “world’s first” satellite Internet for mobile communications. The operator used the BlueWalker 3 satellite to transmit signals to 5G smartphones, but it turned out that even smartphones without 5G support can receive internet from space.

The reason is simple: for data transmission, the operator uses a module that transmits and operates a signal of the same standard as terrestrial base stations. This means that the operator’s customer base can greatly expand, and even users who have not replaced their devices with expensive new products with 5G can subscribe to satellite Internet service.

The company says the BW3 satellite is a gigantic device the size of “two garages”. AST said it’s the largest ever deployed in low Earth orbit.

The provider tested with major mobile operator AT&T in Hawaii using Nokia RAN technology, and the signal from a satellite in low Earth orbit reached speeds of up to 10.3 Mbps. This is sufficient for video streaming and normal internet use.

AST SpaceMobile has been working on this project for several years, and it’s not the only one looking to send data from space – US-based Lynk Global managed to send text messages via satellite in 2020, and Amazon’s Kuiper Satellite Internet Project will send 83 83 already entering low Earth orbit in 2024. to the satellite.
