Death from hypothermia: What makes people strip naked in the last minutes of life?

Some exhibit even more strange behavior, trying to get under a bed or dig a hole.

In 2015, law enforcement was stunned by a case when a son reported the disappearance of a 69-year-old mother, who had not heard anything for the past four days. Investigators later found his body in the basement in the courtyard of his own home. It seemed surprising that the woman was nothing more than a coma in shorts and a T-shirt, IFLScience said.

Detectives speculated that the woman’s death may not have been natural due to the appearance of her clothes and skin injuries. However, the autopsy showed that he died of hypothermia. Later, MD Eric Schafer and Joseph Pralow wrote a scientific paper on this case.

The researchers note that in about 25% of deaths due to hypothermia, victims in the late stages may go through the so-called “paradoxical undressing” process. Scientists still don’t know why this happens, but there are still a few theories. According to one of them, this is due to damage to the part of the brain responsible for thermoregulation. Another theory suggests that when people become hypothermic, the muscles that constrict the blood vessels in their limbs become so tired and literally relax. As a result, there is a rush of blood to the limbs, which makes the person believe that they are hot – at this point the victims become confused and begin to undress.

Scientists note that people who experience “paradoxical peeling” often do not stop throwing their clothes, especially when the temperature gradually drops.

According to the researchers, most of the fully or partially undressed corpses were found in a very awkward position – under the bed, behind the closet or on the shelf. Scientists hypothesize that hypothermia activates an autonomic process in the brainstem that eventually triggers a hypothermia state and triggers primitive defensive behavior. It is very reminiscent of the behavior of hibernating animals when they enter a hole.

Thus, people dying of hypothermia can be found naked and crammed into a confined space. Sometimes it may seem like someone is trying to get rid of a corpse, but this behavior is actually caused by our brain’s defense mechanisms.
